Vines is a first-person, PSX-style procedural horror game about being hired to document a dangerous creature that has control over the sentient vines in its ruined containment facility.

"Welcome, hire, to Underground Facility 17 (UF-17) of the Association for the Rescue and Targeted Endangerment Mitigation of Irregular Species (or ARTEMIS).

ARTEMIS’s aim is to study and rehabilitate pairs of creatures that have been found to coexist suspiciously well in their natural habitats, despite a history of aggression between the observed species’ average members. For instance, you may have seen a viral video of a dog and a cheetah, or a tiger and a monkey playing together. ARTEMIS believes that these are falsehoods—aberrations in the brain chemistry of predators and prey that warrant further scrutiny than the trivialization of short-lived virality.

ARTEMIS UF-17 previously housed two subjects: Subject 9, a bear, and Subject 10, a moose. ARTEMIS operatives recorded the two engaging in a complex, hunter-gatherer-esque relationship, wherein they taught each other how to run down prey and assess the nutritional value of various berries, among other things. The most damning aspect of the relationship, what the operatives labeled most "irregular," was the fact that they were inseparable during sleep. The bear adopted the moose’s sleeping habits, forgoing hibernation in favor of exercise and vastly altering its diet, fat content, musculature, and temperament. The two slept in a den, nestled amongst various species of ivy and moss torn from nearby trees.

Subjects 9 and 10 were uprooted from their natural habitat together, according to protocol, and had spent the last few weeks in captivity at UF-17 until the incident..."

This game was awesome, I really had a good time playing it. Awesome work!

this is fantastic work, y'all. the pixel art and sound design are just perfect for this kind of horror game. you should really submit it to some festivals and conferences like the IGF, IndieCade, and ACM's yearly conference- there are usually categories/programs specifically for student games.

Thank you, Linden! That means a lot coming from you. I'm looking forward to doing so following our completion of its polish this quarter, as well as having you take a look at my portfolio.

😊👍

This was pretty fun, took me a while to get through it but I made it eventually, good work :)

I don't know if It's cause I'm bad but I couldn't beat the game, but it was a lot of fun!

I feel like you just created another SCP like universe here. I'd think about expanding that universe if you want.

Here's my channel for other games I have played. https://www.youtube.com/@Levont

(This was the final game in this video) I was honestly confused the whole time on what was happening, yet somehow managed to beat it! I think the monster and atmosphere are really decent. Just needs some work around more areas! Not a bad game though!

nice spooky

Good atmosphere, legit creepy Ai design and satisfying experience.

The game had a great story. Usually, most science fiction type projects focus more on the spooks and cheap jump scares, while this one had a fantastic environment. The ambience, overall sound design was good. The creature definitely peaked my interest and I was tense through the gameplay.

My only minor complaint would be the mechanics. It was a bit uncomfortable using Q and E keys for the flashlight, not to mention the LMB. At least for me it took a while to adjust. Maybe you can come up with something more simple, although, as I said it did not ruin the entire experience.

Best of luck with the future developments. Cheers!

Modeling of the creature and animation of the vines sprouting looks great. I wish the itchio lore on this page had been added in the game, maybe as opening narration! I added it to the beginning of my vod. NOTES FOR DEVS: At 9:40ish - creature hit shield and sent me ontop the rooms.

Thanks so much for playing! Commentary helps, especially. This was a student project with lots of time limitations, so not everything's made it in yet, but we plan to focus on polishing next!

It is an SCP-inspired OC, the shield bug is known, and you should've gotten an alternate ending for trapping Splitjaw in its enclosure.

Thank you again, and well done!

It looks like you found a bugged version of the alternate ending. Thanks for bringing that to our attention!

Yeah the ending threw me off but it was fun!
